It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my daughter's husband has died, and she has a complaint in her eyes; shall I apply kohl to her eyes?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." She asked this two or three times, and each time he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "No." Then he said: "It is only a period of four months and ten days, whereas previously one of you would throw a piece of dung at the end of a whole year."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman whose husband had died had a complaint in her eye, so those people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked his permission for kohl, and mentioned that they feared for her eye. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Previously one of you would stay in her house for a year, then when the year was complete she would throw a piece of dung. So can she not (wait) even four months and ten days?"

It is narrated from Sayyidah Zaynab bint Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she heard Sayyidah Umm Habibah and Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) relating that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him that a daughter of hers had lost her husband, and she had a complaint in her eyes, and she wanted to apply kohl to her eyes. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Previously one of you would throw a piece of dung at the end of the year, whereas this is only a waiting period of four months and ten days."
