Sayyiduna Abu Muwayhibah (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said: One night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke me and said: "Abu Muwayhibah! Come along, for I have been commanded to seek forgiveness for the people of this Baqi'." So I set out, or he said: we set out. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the middle of al-Baqi', he sought forgiveness for the people of the graves, then said: "Congratulations to you on the state in which you are this morning, if only you knew what Allah has saved you from. Trials are approaching like pieces of the dark night, the last of them following the first, and the later is worse than the former." Then he said: "O Abu Muwayhibah! Do you know that Allah has given me the choice between being granted the treasures of the earth and abiding in it, then Paradise, or meeting my Lord?" I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, take the keys of the treasures of the earth and abiding in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never, O Abu Muwayhibah! I have preferred meeting my Lord." Then he sought forgiveness for the people of the graves and went back. Then when morning came, the illness began in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.

Sayyiduna Abu Muwayhibah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to supplicate (for forgiveness) for the people of al-Baqi', so he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for them three times that same night. When it was the third time, he said: "O Abu Muwayhibah! Saddle my mount for me." I saddled the mount, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) rode and went towards the people of al-Baqi', then he dismounted and I held his (peace and blessings be upon him) mount. He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood over them and said: "Congratulations to you on the state in which you are, while trials will come upon the people like pieces of the dark night, one following another, and the later will be more severe than the former. So congratulations to you on the state in which you are." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "O Abu Muwayhibah! I have been given," or he said: "I have been given the choice of the keys of what Allah will open for my Ummah after me, and Paradise, or meeting my Lord." I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Choose for us (the blessings of the earth). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have chosen meeting my Lord." After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained only seven or eight (days) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.
