It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant me such-and-such land in writing." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How can I write it when it is still in the land of the enemy?" He said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, you will surely become the owners of the land that is now under their feet." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased by this; he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards his Companions and wrote the land for him. Then he said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are in a land of hunting; so what of it is lawful for us and what is unlawful?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you release your trained dog and mention the name of Allah, and it catches the game and kills it, then eat. And when you release your untrained dog, then if you found it alive and slaughtered it, eat; otherwise do not eat. And whatever your arrow brings back to you, eat."
Then he said: "O Prophet of Allah, we are in a land whose inhabitants are People of the Book, and we need their cooking pots and vessels." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not go near them as long as you can manage, but if you have no choice, wash them with water, then cook and drink."
And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the meat of the domestic donkey and every predatory animal with fangs.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: "Our land is a land of hunting. I shoot my arrow and mention the name of Allah, I release my trained dog and mention the name of Allah, and I also release my untrained dog and mention the name of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever your arrow holds for you, and you mentioned the name of Allah, eat it; and whatever your trained dog holds for you, and you mentioned the name of Allah, eat it; and whatever your untrained dog holds for you, and you found it alive and slaughtered it, eat it; but if you did not find it alive, do not eat it."
I said: "O Messenger of Allah, our land is a land of the People of the Book, so what do you command us regarding their vessels?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not go near them, unless you cannot manage without them; then wash them with water, and then cook in them."
