It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hani bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a delegation with some people of his tribe. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard them calling him by the kunyah Abu al-Hakam, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why do these people call you Abu al-Hakam?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I used to judge between my people in whatever matter arose among them, and both parties would be satisfied. For this reason I came to be called Abu al-Hakam, although I have no son, and still I am called Abu al-Hakam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have children?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the name of the eldest of them?" He said: Shurayh. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you are Abu Shurayh."
