Alqamah bin Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came with a rope around his neck. He (the claimant) said: O Messenger of Allah, this man and my brother were digging a well when the pickaxe fell, and he struck his companion's head with it and killed him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Forgive him." He refused. Then he stood up and repeated the same words, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "Forgive him." He refused again, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Take him away; if you kill him, you will be like him." So he went out with him until he had gone some distance, and someone called out to him: Do you not hear what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is saying? So he came back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you kill him, you will be like him." He said: Very well, I forgive him. So he went off dragging his rope until he disappeared from our sight.
