Ziyad bin Jubayr bin Hayyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My father told me; he said: Bandadhqan, the non-Arab chief, sent word to them: "O Arabs! Send one man from among you so that we may speak with him." So the people chose Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him). My father said: It is as if I am still looking at him, long-haired and blind in one eye. He went to him, and when he returned to us we asked him what he had said. He told us: When I had praised and extolled Allah, I said: "We were the people farthest from home, the hungriest of people, the people who endured the greatest hardship, and the people farthest from every good, until Allah sent a Messenger to us, who promised us victory in this world and Paradise in the Hereafter. Ever since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, we have continually seen success and victory from our Lord, until we have reached you."

I came close to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have water with you?" I said: Yes. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his palms and his face, then began to wash his arms, but the sleeve of the jubbah (cloak) he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing was tight, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hand out from under the jubbah and washed it, then wiped over his leather socks. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to pray while Abdur-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer. When they saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they cleared their throats (to signal), and he began to step back, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him: "Carry on."
