Sayyiduna Abdur-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Badr, while I was standing in the row, I looked to my right and my left, and found myself between two young boys of the Ansar. I wished I had been between men stronger than them. Then one of them nudged me and said: "Uncle, do you know Abu Jahl?" I said: "Yes, nephew; what do you want with him?" He said: "I have been told that he reviles the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if I see him, my shadow will not part from his shadow until whichever of us is destined to die first dies." I was amazed at that. Then the other nudged me and said something similar to me. Not long after, I saw Abu Jahl moving about among the people, so I said to the two of them: "This is the man you were looking for." So they both rushed at him with their swords and struck him until they killed him. Then they returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of you killed him?" Each of them said: "I killed him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you wiped your swords clean?" They both said: "No." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the two swords and said: "Both of you killed him." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) awarded his spoils (salab) to Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him). These (two young men who killed him) were Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Afra' and Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with them both).
