حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ رَجَاءٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَدَّادِ بْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَطْلُبُهُ، فَقِيلَ لِي: خَرَجَ، فَجَعَلْتُ لَا أَمُرُّ بِأَحَدٍ إِلَّا قَالَ: مَرَّ قَبْلُ، فَوَجَدْتُهُ قَائِمًا يُصَلِّي، فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ، قُلْتُ: لَقَدْ صَلَّيْتَ صَلَاةً طَوِيلَةً قَالَ: «إِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً، سَأَلْتُ اللهَ ثَلَاثًا، فَأَعْطَانِيَ اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً، سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُهْلِكَ أُمَّتِي غَرَقًا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُظْهِرَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَدُوًّا لَيْسَ مِنْهُمْ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَجْعَلَ بَأْسَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ فَرَدَّهَا عَلَيَّ»
Abdullah bin Shaddad bin al-Had (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looking for him, and I was told: He has gone out. So whenever I passed by anyone, he would say: He passed by here earlier. Then I found him standing in prayer. When he had completed his prayer, I said: You have prayed a very long prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I prayed (this) prayer out of hope and fear. I asked Allah for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked Him not to destroy my Ummah by drowning, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to give an enemy from other than them dominance over them, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to let their fighting be among themselves, and He did not grant me that."
حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا وَكِيعٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ رَجَاءٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَدَّادِ بْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ: صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا صَلَاةً فَأَطَالَ فِيهَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَقَدْ أَطَلْتَ الْيَوْمَ الصَّلَاةَ، فَقَالَ: «إِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ صَلَاةَ رَغْبَةٍ وَرَهْبَةٍ، وَسَأَلْتُ اللهَ لِأُمَّتِي ثَلَاثًا فَأَعْطَانِيَ اثْنَتَيْنِ وَرَدَّ وَاحِدَةً، سَأَلْتُ أَنْ لَا يُسَلَّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَدُوًّا مِنْ غَيْرِهِمْ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُهْلِكَهُمْ غَرَقًا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَجْعَلَ بَأْسَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ»
Abdullah bin Shaddad bin al-Had (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a prayer in which he prolonged it. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished, I said: O Messenger of Allah, today you made the prayer very long. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I prayed (this) prayer out of hope and fear, and I asked Allah for three things for my Ummah; He granted me two and withheld one. I asked that He not give an enemy from other than them dominance over them, and He granted me that. I asked that He not destroy them by drowning, and He granted me that. And I asked that He not let their fighting be among themselves, and He did not grant me that."
