Urwah bin al-Nazzal, or al-Nazzal bin Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him), narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bakh, bakh (excellent, excellent)! You have asked about something tremendous, yet it is easy for the one for whom Allah makes it easy: that you worship Allah, not associating anything with Him, establish the obligatory prayer, and pay the obligatory zakah. Shall I not guide you to the gates of good? Shall I not guide you to the head of this religion, its pillar and its highest peak? As for the head of the religion, it is Islam; whoever embraces Islam is safe. As for its pillar, it is the prayer; and as for its highest peak, it is jihad in the path of Allah. Shall I not guide you to the gates of good? Fasting is a shield, charity wipes out sin, and the servant's standing (in prayer) in the depths of the night (is also a gate of good)." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Their sides forsake their beds" [Al-Sajdah: 16]. "Shall I not tell you of something greater than all of this, which has control over all of it?" Just then a rider, or some riders, approached, and I thought they would occupy the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) away from me, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not guide you to that which is greater than all of this and has control over all of it?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand to his tongue. I said: O Messenger of Allah, will we be held accountable even for what we speak? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu'adh! Nothing throws people face down into the Fire except the harvests of their tongues."
