Hissan bin Kahil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating from Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No servant dies bearing witness that there is no true god except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, with this testimony coming from a heart that has certainty, except that he will enter Paradise." He was asked: "Did you hear this (hadith) from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "I heard it from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrated it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Hissan bin Kahil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I entered the congregational mosque in Basrah and sat down beside an elderly man with white hair and a white beard. He said: Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no soul that dies while bearing witness that there is no true god except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, with this testimony coming from a believing heart, except that Allah will forgive it." I asked: "Did you hear this yourself from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him)?" It was as if the people rebuked him harshly. He (the elder) said: "Do not rebuke him, do not reproach him; leave him alone. I heard this (hadith) myself from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrated it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." I asked the people: "Who is this?" They said: "This is Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him)."
