Sayyiduna Abu Ruhm al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who gave the pledge beneath the tree, said: I took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the expedition of Tabuk. One night, as we were travelling, I was riding close to him (peace and blessings be upon him) when drowsiness overcame me. I kept waking with a start to find that my mount had come close to his (peace and blessings be upon him) mount, and its closeness alarmed me, for fear that it might strike his (peace and blessings be upon him) foot in the stirrup, so I would pull my mount back. Until, during part of the night, my eyes were overcome by sleep, and my mount pressed against his (peace and blessings be upon him) foot in the stirrup and struck his (peace and blessings be upon him) foot. I only woke up at his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Hass!" (Ouch). I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Seek forgiveness for me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep going." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began asking me about those of Banu Ghifar who had stayed behind, and I would tell him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What became of the tall, red-complexioned people with sparse beards?" So I told him of their staying behind. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What became of those black people," or he said: "the short, curly-haired people with sparse beards, whose livestock graze at Shabakah?" I tried to recall them among Banu Ghifar but could not, until I remembered a group of Banu Aslam, so I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Those are a group of Banu Aslam who have stayed behind." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what prevented any one of them, while staying behind, from mounting an energetic man on one of his camels and sending him in the path of Allah? For the hardest thing for me is that my own people, the Muhajirun of Quraysh, the Ansar, Aslam and Ghifar, should stay behind from me."

The nephew of Abu Ruhm al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that he heard Abu Ruhm (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among those who gave the pledge beneath the tree at the time of the Pledge of Ridwan, say: I went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on an expedition. One night I halted, and then I began riding close to him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the narrator related the (rest of the) hadith.

Sayyiduna Abu Ruhm Kulthum bin Husayn al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who pledged allegiance beneath the tree, said: I took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the expedition of Tabuk. One night I was travelling with him (peace and blessings be upon him); we were at al-Akhdar and I was close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Drowsiness overcame us. I kept starting awake and seeing that my mount had come close to the mount of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Its nearness to him (peace and blessings be upon him) alarmed me, for fear that it might strike his (peace and blessings be upon him) foot in the stirrup, so I would steer my mount away from him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, at some point on the road, during the night, sleep overcame me and my mount collided with the mount of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while his (peace and blessings be upon him) foot was in the stirrup. I only came to my senses when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Hiss!" (an exclamation of pain). So I said: O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep going." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began asking me about those of Banu Ghifar who had stayed behind, and I kept informing him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What happened to the tall, red-complexioned people with sparse beards?" So I told him that they had stayed behind. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what happened to the black, curly-haired, short people?" I said: By Allah, I do not recognise these people as being from among us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Of course you do, those whose livestock are at Shabakat Shadkh." So I tried to recall them among Banu Ghifar but could not, until I remembered that they were a group from Banu Aslam who were our allies. So I said: O Messenger of Allah, those are a group from Banu Aslam who were our allies. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevented any one of them, even while staying behind, from mounting some energetic man on one of his camels and sending him in the path of Allah?
