Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about alliances (pacts and covenants), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever alliance there was in the Days of Ignorance, hold fast to it; and there is no new alliance in Islam."

Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), met him in private and accepted Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to take a ritual bath with water and lote-tree leaves, and he bathed. Then the prayer was called, and he entered between Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and stood between them. When the prayer was finished, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Qays bin Asim has asked me about three things which no one but Abu Bakr has asked me about."

Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): I buried twelve or thirteen daughters alive in the Days of Ignorance. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free a soul (a slave) on behalf of each one of them."

Hakim bin Qays bin Asim al-Tamimi narrates that his father gave this counsel at the time of his death: "My sons, fear Allah, and make the eldest of you your chief, for when a people make their eldest their chief, they put him in place of their father; and when they make their youngest their chief, it is a disgrace to you among your peers. Hold fast to earning and caring for wealth, for it rouses generosity and through it one is freed from need of the base. Beware of asking people, for it is the last resort of a man's earning. When I die, do not wail over me, for no wailing was done over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And when I die, bury me in a land where Banu Bakr bin Wa'il will not know of my burial, for I used to raid them by night in the Days of Ignorance."

Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim al-Minqari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he saw me I heard him say: "This is the chief of the Arabs." He said: When we had settled, I came to him and began talking with him. I said: O Messenger of Allah, (how much is) the wealth for which I will not be held to account on account of a guest who stays with me or dependants who have grown many? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Forty camels is good wealth, and sixty at the most; and woe to the owners of two hundred, except one who gives of their milk and their use to people, lends his riding animals for others' service, slaughters the fat ones and feeds the one who asks and the needy." I said: O Prophet of Allah, how noble and how excellent these manners are! O Messenger of Allah, because of the great number of my camels, no one settles in the valley where I am. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you do?" I said: The camels go out in the morning and the people go out in the morning, and whoever wishes takes hold of a camel's head and leads it away. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you do about lending riding animals to others?" I said: I do not lend the young one or the old she-camel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is your own wealth dearer to you, or the wealth of your heirs?" I said: My own wealth is dearer to me than the wealth of my heirs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Of your wealth, yours is only what you eat and consume, or wear and wear out, or give away and spend; other than that (what remains is not yours, it is for others)." I said: By Allah, if I remain alive, I will use it all up. Al-Hasan (al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him) said: By Allah, he did so. Then, when death came to Qays (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "My sons, take counsel from me; no one is a better well-wisher to you than I: When I die, make your elders your chiefs, and do not make your young ones your chiefs, otherwise people will consider you foolish and you will become contemptible in their eyes. Hold fast to caring for wealth, for it rouses the noble and through it one is freed from need of the base. Beware of asking people, for it is the last resort of a man's earning; no one asks except that he abandons his earning. When I die, do not wail over me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid wailing. Shroud me in the clothes in which I used to pray and fast. And when you bury me, do not bury me in a place where anyone can find out about me, for there were wounds (enmities) between me and Bakr bin Wa'il in the Days of Ignorance, and I fear that they will dig me out of the grave and do something because of which both your religion and your worldly life will be ruined." Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He was a well-wisher to them in life and a well-wisher to them in death.

Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sawiyyah al-Minqari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I heard Ibn Asim (Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim, may Allah be pleased with him) giving his last counsel. He gathered his sons, who were thirty-two males, and said: "My sons, when I die, make the eldest of you your chief so that you may take the place of your fathers, and do not make the youngest of you your chief, otherwise it will bring disgrace on you among your companions. Do not appoint a wailing woman over me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid wailing. Hold fast to caring for wealth, for it rouses the noble and through it one is freed from need of the base. Give camels only on (occasions of) their due right, and do not withhold them from their due right. Beware of every bad stock, for however much it pleases you one day, it will grieve you far more. Be wary of the sons of your enemies, for they are your enemies after the way of their fathers. And when I die, bury me in a place where this tribe of Banu Bakr bin Wa'il will not find out about me, for there were wounds (enmities) between me and them in the Days of Ignorance, and I fear that they will dig me out of the grave and thereby ruin their worldly life and ruin your Hereafter." Then he called for his quiver and gave an order to his eldest son, whose name was Ali, saying: "Take an arrow out of my quiver." He took it out, and he said: "Break it." He broke it. Then he said: "Take out two arrows." He took them out, and he said: "Break them." He broke them. Then he said: "Take out three arrows." He took them out, and he said: "Break them." He broke them. Then he said: "Take out thirty arrows." He took them out, and he said: "Tie them together with a cord." He tied them. Then he said: "Break them." He could not break them, and he said: "My sons, like this are you (strong) when united, and like that are you (weak) when divided." Then he recited these verses:
True glory is only what a truthful father has built, and what his offspring has kept alive by his deeds.
Glory, bravery and forbearance suffice when chastity and generosity adorn them.
O my sons, you are thirty brothers; when you bind covenants against misfortunes,
you are like thirty arrows which, when bound with a strong cord,
do not break; but if the arrows are scattered, their very scattering destroys their whole.
Those of age and dignity among you are the most deserving of chieftainship,
and upon them is the care of the young until even the youngest reaches maturity and becomes capable of striving.
