Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The greatest effort these people are making is to make me abandon my religion, but that will not happen until I meet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions: "Whoever sells food or fodder from what was taken (as spoils) in the land of the Romans for gold or silver, then the one-fifth (khums) of Allah and the shares of the Muslims become due on it."

When his companions came to Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him), he would say: "Study (the religion) together, rejoice, and keep increasing; may Allah increase you in goodness, and may He love you and love whoever loves you. Keep repeating the questions to us, for the reward of the last of them is like the reward of the first, and mix your conversation with seeking forgiveness."

Ibn Muhayriz narrated: I kept the company of Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I said: Give me some advice, may Allah have mercy on you. He said: "Remember three things from me, and Allah will benefit you through them: if you are able to know others but not be known yourself, then do so; if you are able to listen and not speak, then do so; and if you are able to sit (with others) without people coming to sit with you, then do so."
