Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I spent a night with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to see how he prayed. He got up and went to a waterskin hanging from a peg fixed in the wall, performed ablution (wudu), and then prayed two rak'ahs; his standing was as long as his bowing, and his bowing was as long as his prostration. Then he slept, then he woke up, performed ablution, and sniffed water into his nose and blew it out. Then he recited the fifty verses of Surah Al Imran in which it says: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day (are signs)" [Surah Al Imran: 190]. He kept doing this until he had prayed ten rak'ahs. Then he stood and prayed one rak'ah with which he completed the witr, and at that time the caller gave the call to prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up after the mu'adhdhin had fallen silent and prayed two light rak'ahs, then he remained seated until he prayed the Fajr prayer.
