It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the people saying: "O Messenger of Allah, which deed is the most excellent?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith in Allah and His Messenger, striving (jihad) in the path of Allah, and an accepted Hajj (Hajj mabrur)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a voice in the valley saying: "I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And I too bear witness, and I too bear witness. No one bears witness to it except that he becomes free of shirk (associating partners with Allah)."

Sayyiduna Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) among some of his Companions when Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, bringing a mount loaded with two sacks, and he had tied the rope of his she-camel around his waist. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What is in these two sacks?" He replied: "Flour, ghee and honey." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make (the camel) kneel." So he made the she-camel kneel. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a cooking pot and put some of that flour, ghee and honey into it, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate, and then said to his Companions: "Eat; this is what the people of Persia call 'khabis'."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Allah intended to guide Zayd bin Sa'nah, Zayd bin Sa'nah said (later): "There was no sign of prophethood that I did not recognise in the face of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when I looked at him, except for two things that I did not yet know: first, that his forbearance overtakes the ignorance (and anger shown to him), and second, that intense ignorance only increases him in forbearance. So I began trying gently to come close to him until I increased my dealings with him, so that I could recognise his forbearance in the face of ignorance." Zayd bin Sa'nah said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the chambers, and with him was Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). A man like a Bedouin came to him on his mount and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the people of the village of such-and-such a tribe have accepted Islam and entered into Islam, and I had told them that if they accepted Islam, abundant provision would come to them. But drought and hardship have befallen them, and the rain has stopped. So, O Messenger of Allah, I fear that they will leave Islam out of the same greed with which they entered it. If you see fit, send them something to help them." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at a man standing at his side, I think it was Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "O Messenger of Allah, nothing of it remains." Zayd bin Sa'nah said: I went close to him and said: "O Muhammad, will you sell me a specified quantity of dates from the orchard of such-and-such a tribe, (on credit) until such-and-such a term?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, O Jew. Rather, I will sell you a specified quantity of dates until such-and-such a term, but do not name the orchard of such-and-such a tribe." I said: "Very well." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) concluded the sale with me. I opened my purse and gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) 80 mithqals of gold in exchange for specified dates until that specified term. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave that gold to a man and said: "Deal justly with them and inform them (about it)." Zayd bin Sa'nah said: Then, when two or three days remained before the term was due, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out, and with him were Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) and a group of the Companions. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered the funeral prayer and came near a wall to sit down, I went to him, seized his shirt and his cloak, looked at him with a harsh face, and said: "O Muhammad, will you not pay me my due? By Allah, I know you, the Banu Abd al-Muttalib, to be nothing but procrastinators; I have experience of dealing with you people." Then I looked at Umar, and his eyes were rolling (in anger) like a spinning orbit. Then he cast his gaze upon me and said: "O enemy of Allah! Do you say to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) what I am hearing, and treat him the way I am seeing? By the One who sent him (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, were it not that I fear losing something else, I would have struck off your head with my sword." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was looking at Umar calmly and gently. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: "O Umar, he and I were more in need of something other than this: you should have told me to repay in a good manner, and told him to demand his due in a good manner. O Umar, take him, give him his due, and give him twenty sa' of dates more in return for the fright you gave him." Zayd said: Umar took me, gave me my due and gave me twenty sa' of dates more. I said: "O Umar, what is this extra?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to give you more in return for the fright I gave you." I said: "O Umar, do you know me?" He said: "No. So what made you treat the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the way you did?" I said: "O Umar, there was no sign of prophethood that I did not recognise in the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when I looked at him, except for two things that I did not yet know: first, that his forbearance overtakes the ignorance, and second, that intense ignorance only increases him in forbearance. Now I have come to know these two as well. So, O Umar, I make you my witness that I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as Prophet. And I make you my witness that half of my wealth, and my wealth is very great, is charity for the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." Umar said: "Or for some of them, for your wealth cannot suffice them all." I said: "Or for some of them, then." Then Umar and Zayd returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Zayd said: "I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger." So he believed in him, affirmed him and followed him, and took part with him in many battles. Then he died in the Battle of Tabuk, advancing and not retreating. May Allah have mercy on Zayd.

Hamzah bin Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Jewish rabbis: "I wish to renew my bond with the mosque of our father Ibrahim and Isma'il (peace be upon them both) (by visiting it)." So he set out towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was in Makkah at that time. He reached them when the people had returned from Hajj, and he found the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Mina with the people around him. I too stood with the people. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at me, he said: "Are you Abdullah bin Salam?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Come near." So I went near him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abdullah bin Salam, I ask you by Allah: do you not find me in the Torah as the Messenger of Allah?" I said: "Describe our Lord." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam said: Thereupon Jibril (peace be upon him) came and stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to him: "Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He neither begets nor was He begotten, and there is none equal to Him." [Surah al-Ikhlas: 1-4]. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited it to us. Ibn Salam said: "I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah." Then he returned to Madinah and concealed his Islam. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated and arrived in Madinah, I was up on one of my date palms, picking its fruit. I heard a commotion in Madinah and said: "What is this?" The people said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has arrived." Ibn Salam said: I immediately threw myself down from the top of the date palm, then came running until I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam. Then I returned, and my mother said: "You are amazing! By Allah, even if Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him) had come, you would not have thrown yourself down from the top of the date palm like this." I said: "By Allah, I am more delighted at the arrival of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than at the sending of Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him)."

Abd al-Malik bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Muhammad bin Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam sought permission to visit al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf, but the doorkeepers did not recognise him and did not give him permission. Then Anbasah bin Sa'id came and sought permission for him from al-Hajjaj, and he gave permission. He entered and greeted, and al-Hajjaj ordered two men sitting near the throne to make room for him, so he sat down. Al-Hajjaj said to him: "Well done (how excellent is your father)! Do you know the hadith that your father Abd al-Malik bin Marwan narrated from your grandfather Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "May Allah have mercy on you, which hadith? For there are many hadiths." He said: "The hadith of the Egyptians when they came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: "I know that hadith. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) came while Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was under siege. He went and entered upon him; the people made room for him until he got inside, and he said: 'Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers.' He said: 'And upon you be peace. O Abdullah bin Salam, what has brought you?' He said: 'I have come to stand firm (with you) until you are martyred or Allah grants you victory. I do not think these people will refrain from killing you; if they kill you, that will be better for you and worse for them.' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: 'I ask you by the right I have over you to go out to them, so that Allah may bring about some good through you or ward off some evil through you.' He heard and obeyed, and went out to them. When the people saw him, they gathered, thinking that he had brought them something that would please them. He stood up to deliver a sermon, praised and extolled Allah, then said: 'To proceed: Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, giving glad tidings of Paradise to those who obey him and warning of Hell those who disobey him; and Allah made those who follow him prevail over all religion, even though the polytheists dislike it. Then Allah chose a dwelling for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and He chose Madinah and made it the abode of emigration and the abode of faith. By Allah! Ever since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to this city, the angels have continually surrounded this city, and the sword of Allah has remained sheathed from you until today.' Then he said: 'Indeed, Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth; so whoever is guided is guided only by the guidance of Allah, and whoever goes astray goes astray only after clear explanation and proof. And no prophet was ever killed in the past except that seventy thousand fighters were killed in retribution for him, all of them killed for him; and no caliph was ever killed except that thirty-five thousand fighters were killed in retribution for him, all of them killed for him. So do not hasten to kill this elderly man. By Allah! Whoever among you kills him will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with his hand cut off and paralysed. Know that whatever right a father has over his son, this elderly man has the same right over you.' The narrator said: The people stood up and said: 'The Jews have lied! The Jews have lied!' He said: 'By Allah, you have lied, and you are sinners. I am not a Jew; I am one of the Muslims, and Allah, His Messenger and the believers know that, and the Qur'an was revealed concerning me.' Then he recited this verse: 'Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and (so is) the one who has knowledge of the Book' [Surah al-Ra'd: 43], 'and Allah revealed this other verse too: Say: Have you considered, if it is from Allah and you have disbelieved in it, and a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed, while you were arrogant' [Surah al-Ahqaf: 10]. The narrator said: The people then stood up, went in to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and slaughtered him the way a lamb is slaughtered. Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Abd al-Malik bin Umayr: 'What is "hullan"?' He said: 'A lamb.' The narrator said: Before that, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had said to Kathir bin al-Salt: 'O Kathir, by Allah, I will be killed tomorrow.' He said: 'Rather, may Allah raise your rank and humiliate your enemy.' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated it a second time, then a third time, and he said the same thing to him. He asked: 'O Commander of the Believers, why do you say this?' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and with him were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Uthman, tomorrow you will be with us, and tomorrow you will be killed." So by Allah, I will certainly be killed.' The narrator said: Then he was martyred. The narrator said: Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to the people before they dispersed, while they were in the mosque, stood on his feet and said: 'O people of Egypt! O killers of Uthman! You have killed the Commander of the Believers. Listen, by Allah! From now on there will always be broken covenants, shed blood, and wealth to be divided that will never be divided.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: After (the end of) the Dajjal, people will live for forty years; the markets will flourish and date palms will be planted.
