Abd al-Malik bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Muhammad bin Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam sought permission to visit al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf, but the doorkeepers did not recognise him and did not give him permission. Then Anbasah bin Sa'id came and sought permission for him from al-Hajjaj, and he gave permission. He entered and greeted, and al-Hajjaj ordered two men sitting near the throne to make room for him, so he sat down. Al-Hajjaj said to him: "Well done (how excellent is your father)! Do you know the hadith that your father Abd al-Malik bin Marwan narrated from your grandfather Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "May Allah have mercy on you, which hadith? For there are many hadiths." He said: "The hadith of the Egyptians when they came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: "I know that hadith. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) came while Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was under siege. He went and entered upon him; the people made room for him until he got inside, and he said: 'Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers.' He said: 'And upon you be peace. O Abdullah bin Salam, what has brought you?' He said: 'I have come to stand firm (with you) until you are martyred or Allah grants you victory. I do not think these people will refrain from killing you; if they kill you, that will be better for you and worse for them.' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: 'I ask you by the right I have over you to go out to them, so that Allah may bring about some good through you or ward off some evil through you.' He heard and obeyed, and went out to them. When the people saw him, they gathered, thinking that he had brought them something that would please them. He stood up to deliver a sermon, praised and extolled Allah, then said: 'To proceed: Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, giving glad tidings of Paradise to those who obey him and warning of Hell those who disobey him; and Allah made those who follow him prevail over all religion, even though the polytheists dislike it. Then Allah chose a dwelling for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and He chose Madinah and made it the abode of emigration and the abode of faith. By Allah! Ever since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to this city, the angels have continually surrounded this city, and the sword of Allah has remained sheathed from you until today.' Then he said: 'Indeed, Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth; so whoever is guided is guided only by the guidance of Allah, and whoever goes astray goes astray only after clear explanation and proof. And no prophet was ever killed in the past except that seventy thousand fighters were killed in retribution for him, all of them killed for him; and no caliph was ever killed except that thirty-five thousand fighters were killed in retribution for him, all of them killed for him. So do not hasten to kill this elderly man. By Allah! Whoever among you kills him will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with his hand cut off and paralysed. Know that whatever right a father has over his son, this elderly man has the same right over you.' The narrator said: The people stood up and said: 'The Jews have lied! The Jews have lied!' He said: 'By Allah, you have lied, and you are sinners. I am not a Jew; I am one of the Muslims, and Allah, His Messenger and the believers know that, and the Qur'an was revealed concerning me.' Then he recited this verse: 'Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and (so is) the one who has knowledge of the Book' [Surah al-Ra'd: 43], 'and Allah revealed this other verse too: Say: Have you considered, if it is from Allah and you have disbelieved in it, and a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed, while you were arrogant' [Surah al-Ahqaf: 10]. The narrator said: The people then stood up, went in to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and slaughtered him the way a lamb is slaughtered. Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Abd al-Malik bin Umayr: 'What is "hullan"?' He said: 'A lamb.' The narrator said: Before that, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had said to Kathir bin al-Salt: 'O Kathir, by Allah, I will be killed tomorrow.' He said: 'Rather, may Allah raise your rank and humiliate your enemy.' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated it a second time, then a third time, and he said the same thing to him. He asked: 'O Commander of the Believers, why do you say this?' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and with him were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Uthman, tomorrow you will be with us, and tomorrow you will be killed." So by Allah, I will certainly be killed.' The narrator said: Then he was martyred. The narrator said: Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to the people before they dispersed, while they were in the mosque, stood on his feet and said: 'O people of Egypt! O killers of Uthman! You have killed the Commander of the Believers. Listen, by Allah! From now on there will always be broken covenants, shed blood, and wealth to be divided that will never be divided.'"
