Uthman bin Suhayb (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father, Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him), that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Who was the most wretched of the earlier peoples?" He said: The one who hamstrung the she-camel, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have spoken the truth. Then who will be the most wretched of the later peoples?" He said: I have no knowledge, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who will strike you here," and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand to the crown of his head. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to the people of Iraq: "By Allah, I wish that the most wretched of you would be sent forth and dye this, meaning my beard, from this," and he placed his hand on the front of his head. This wording is from the narration of Suwayd bin Sa'id, and al-Hadrami said in his narration: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand to the crown of his head.
