Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7282 — he said: When water, then wine, then milk

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَسْوَدِ النَّضْرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، أَنَّ جَعْفَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُبَيْدَ بْنَ عُمَيْرٍ اللَّيْثِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ صُهَيْبِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ، قَالَ: " لَمَّا عُرِضَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمِ الْمَاءُ، ثُمَّ الْخَمْرُ، ثُمَّ اللَّبَنُ أَخَذَ اللَّبَنَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ جِبْرِيلُ: أَصَبْتَ أَخَذْتَ الْفِطْرَةَ، وَبِهَا عُذِّبَتْ كُلُّ دَابَّةٍ، وَلَوْ أَخَذْتَ الْخَمْرَ غَوَيْتَ، وَغَوَتْ أُمَّتُكَ، وَكُنْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِ هَذِهِ، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى الْوَادِي الَّذِي يُقَالُ لَهُ: وَادِي جَهَنَّمَ، فَنَظَرْتُ فِيهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ يَلْتَهِبُ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayb bin Sinan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When water, then wine, then milk were presented to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) took the milk. Jibril (peace be upon him) said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): You have done right; you have chosen the fitrah (natural disposition), and by it every living creature is nourished. Had you taken the wine, you would have gone astray and your Ummah would have gone astray, and you would have been among the people of this place, and he pointed to the valley called the Valley of Jahannam. I looked into it, and it was blazing.
