حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا أَبِي ح، وحَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ النُّفَيْلِيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَهُ: يَا صُهَيْبُ، اكْتَنَيْتَ وَلَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَدٌ، وَانْتَمَيْتَ إِلَى الْعَرَبِ وَأَنْتَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الرُّومِ، فَقَالَ: «يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، أَمَّا قَوْلُكَ اكْتَنَيْتَ، وَلَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَدٌ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ كَنَّانِي بِأَبِي يَحْيَى، وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ انْتَمَيْتَ إِلَى الْعَرَبِ، وَأَنْتَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الرُّومِ، فَإِنِّي رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّمِرِ بْنِ قَاسِطٍ سُبِيتُ مِنَ الْمَوْصِلِ بَعْدَ أَنْ كُنْتُ غُلَامًا قَدْ عَرَفْتُ أَهْلِي وَنَسَبِي»
Hamzah bin Suhayb (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father, Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him), that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O Suhayb, you have taken a kunyah though you have no son, and you trace your lineage to the Arabs though you are a man from the Romans. He said: "O Commander of the Believers, as for your saying that I have taken a kunyah though I have no son, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the kunyah Abu Yahya. And as for your saying that I trace my lineage to the Arabs though I am a man from the Romans, I am a man of the tribe of al-Namir bin Qasit; I was taken captive from Mosul after I had already come to know my family and my lineage."
