It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in prayer on the day of the solar eclipse, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice could not be heard in it.

Tha'labah bin Ibad al-Abdi says: I heard Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) say in his sermon: A boy from the Ansar and I were shooting arrows at a target when the sun rose, and in the eye of the beholder it was about two or three spears high. Then it shone until it became bright as though it were a tannumah (a dark-coloured plant). So one of us said to his companion: "Come, let us go; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will surely say something about the solar eclipse concerning the affair of his Ummah." So we reached the mosque and saw that the mosque was packed full, and this coincided with the coming out of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward and led the people in prayer, and we were behind him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) made us stand for as long as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had never made us stand in prayer; we could not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) made us bow for as long as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had never made us bow in prayer; we could not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) made us prostrate for as long as he had never made us prostrate before; we could not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice. Then he did the same in the second rak'ah, and the clearing of the sun coincided with the sitting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) concluded the prayer with the salam, praised and extolled Allah, and bore witness that there is no true god except Allah, and bore witness that he is His servant and Messenger. Then he said: "O people, I am only a human being and a Messenger. I ask you by Allah: if you know that I have fallen short in anything in conveying the messages of my Lord, then tell me. I have conveyed the messages of my Lord as they ought to be conveyed. And if you know that I have conveyed the messages of my Lord, then tell me?" So the Companions said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed the messages of your Lord, sincerely advised your Ummah, and fulfilled what was obligatory upon you." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To proceed: some men claim that the eclipse of this sun and this moon, or the stars moving away from their places, happens because of the death of some great man of the earth. But they have lied. Rather, it is one of the signs of Allah by which He admonishes His servants, so that He may see which of them turns to Him in repentance. In this place of mine, while I was praying, I was shown everything you are going to face in your world and your Hereafter. The Hour will not be established until thirty liars appear, the last of whom will be the one-eyed Dajjal, whose left eye will be wiped out, as though it were like the eye of Abu Tihya - an elder of the Ansar who was (at that time) between him and the chamber of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). When he emerges, he will claim that he is Allah. Whoever believes in him and accepts him as truthful, none of his previous good deeds will benefit him; and whoever rejects him and belies him will not be punished for any deed he did before. He will prevail over the entire earth except the Haram and Bayt al-Maqdis. The believers will be besieged in Bayt al-Maqdis in a severe siege, and they will be afflicted with severe hardship." Al-Aswad bin Qays says: And I think that he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Then Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will appear among them in the morning, and Allah will defeat him (the Dajjal) and his armies, until the base of a wall and the branch of a tree will call out to the believer, saying: 'This disbeliever is hiding behind me; come and kill him.' And this will not happen until you see things in your affairs that grow ever greater in your hearts, until you ask one another: 'Did your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) make any mention of this?' And until the mountains move away from their places. Then after that there will be the time of death." Ibn al-Mubarak says: That is, by "al-qabd" death is meant.

Tha'labah bin Ibad says: I was present with Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was delivering a sermon, and in his sermon he related a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a boy from the Ansar and I were shooting arrows at our two targets when the sun rose, and in the eye of the beholder it was about one or two spears high above the horizon. Then it became dark until it became bright as though it were a tannumah (a dark-coloured plant). So one of them said to his companion: "Take us to the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, today he (peace and blessings be upon him) will surely say something about the affair of this sun concerning his Ummah." The narrator says: We hastened to the mosque, and we arrived with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to the people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward and led the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) made us stand for as long as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had never ever made us stand in prayer; we could not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) made us prostrate for as long as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had never ever made us prostrate in prayer; we could not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and led us in another rak'ah like it, then sat, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting coincided with the clearing of the sun. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam and finished the prayer, then praised and extolled Allah, then said: "O people, I ask you by Allah: if you know that I have conveyed the message of my Lord, then tell me; and if you know that I have fallen short in anything in conveying the message of my Lord, then tell me." When he emerges, he will claim that he is Allah. Whoever believes in him and accepts him as truthful, none of his previous good deeds will benefit him; and whoever rejects him and fights him will not be punished for any deed he did before. He will prevail over the entire earth except the Haram and Bayt al-Maqdis, and he will drive the people to Bayt al-Maqdis, and they will be besieged in a severe siege." The narrator says: And I think that he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Then Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will appear among them in the morning and will kill him (the Dajjal) and his armies, until a stone or the base of a wall will call out: 'O Muslim,' or 'O believer, this is a disbeliever hiding behind me; come and kill him.' And this will not happen until you see great events whose matter grows ever greater in your hearts, and you ask one another: 'Did your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tell you any mention of this?'" Then he said: "Immediately after that there will be the time of death."

He said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a boy from the Ansar and I were shooting arrows at our two targets, until when the sun was, in the eyes of the beholders, about two or three spears (high) above the horizon, it became dark until it became bright as though it were a tannumah (a dark-coloured plant). So I went to the mosque and saw that it was packed full, that is, overflowing. We arrived with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to the people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward and made us stand for as long as he (peace and blessings be upon him) had never ever made us stand in prayer; we could not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice. So the people stood up and said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed the messages of your Lord, sincerely advised your Ummah, and fulfilled what was obligatory upon you." Then they fell silent, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To proceed: some men claim that the eclipse of this sun and the eclipse of this moon, and these stars moving away from their places, are caused by the death of one of the great people of the earth. But they have lied. Rather, these are signs among the signs of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, by which He admonishes His servants, so that He may see which of them turns to Him in repentance. By Allah, since I stood up to pray I have seen everything you are going to face in the affairs of your world and your Hereafter. Whoever believes in him, accepts him as truthful and follows him, his previous good deeds will not benefit him; and whoever rejects him and belies him will not be punished for any deed he did before. He will prevail over the entire earth except the Haram and Bayt al-Maqdis. He will besiege the Muslims in Bayt al-Maqdis, and they will be afflicted with severe hardship. Then Allah will destroy him and his armies, until the base of a wall and the root of a tree will say: 'O believer,' or 'O Muslim, this is a disbeliever; come and kill him.' And this will not happen until you see great events whose matter grows ever greater in your hearts, then you ask one another: 'Did your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tell you any mention of this?' And until the mountains move away from their places. Then immediately after that there will be the time of death." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his fingers and pointed to the right and to the left. Then I heard a sermon of Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) in which he related this same hadith, and he did not move a single word forward or backward.
