It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Khayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Standing guard for a day and a night is better than fasting a month and standing it in prayer. Whoever dies while standing guard in the path of Allah, that same reward will continue to accrue to him, his provision will continue to be provided, and he will be kept safe from the trial."

Shurahbil bin al-Simt narrated that he saw Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) standing guard on the coast of Hims, and he asked: Why are you here? He said: I am standing guard. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Standing guard for one day in the path of Allah is like fasting a month and standing it in prayer. Whoever dies while standing guard, the deed he used to do continues for him, he is kept safe from the trial, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be raised as a martyr."

Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I set out in search of the religion, and among the monks I met the remnants of the People of the Book. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: {They recognise him as they recognise their own sons} [Al-Baqarah: 146]. They used to say: This is the time of a Prophet which has drawn near; he will appear from the land of the Arabs, and he has certain signs, among them a round mole between his shoulders, which is the Seal of Prophethood. So I made my way to the land of the Arabs, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already been sent. I saw everything they had described, and I also saw the Seal of Prophethood. So I bore witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. And I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Standing guard (on the frontier) for a day and a night is better than a month of fasting and standing in prayer, (as if he were) one who stands in prayer without slackening and one who fasts without breaking his fast. And if he dies while standing guard, the reward like that of his good deeds continues to reach him until he is raised up, and he is protected from the punishment of the grave."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Khayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are four deeds of the living whose reward continues to reach the dead: first, a man who leaves behind righteous offspring who keep supplicating for him, so their supplication keeps reaching him; second, a man who gives a charity that continues after him, so as long as it continues he keeps receiving its reward; third, a man who teaches some knowledge which is then acted upon after him, so he receives a reward equal to that of the one who acts upon it, without anything being reduced from the reward of the one who acts upon it."
