Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that the nobles of Quraysh gathered at the door of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), among them al-Harith bin Hisham, Abu Sufyan bin Harb and Suhayl bin Amr, and also present there were slaves and freedmen from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When permission came, people such as Sayyiduna Bilal and Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with them both) were permitted to enter, and the rest were left. At this Abu Sufyan said: I have never seen a day like today! He gave permission to these slaves, and kept us sitting at his door and did not give us permission. Then Suhayl bin Amr, who was a wise man, said: "O people! By Allah, I see what is in your faces. If you are angry, then be angry with yourselves. These people were called and you were called; they hastened and you were slow. By Allah! Losing the virtue in which they have gone ahead of you is far harder for you than (being admitted at) this door over which you are competing with one another." Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Allah does not make a servant who hastens towards Him like a servant who lags behind.
