Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) died, and the Companions began praising him and mentioning his worship, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. When they fell silent, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did he remember death often?" The Companions said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did he give up many of the things he desired?" The Companions said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your companion has not reached the rank that you believe he has."
