It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that an old man was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who was suffering from dropsy, yellow in complexion, with his veins showing; he had committed zina (fornication) with a woman. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him with a bunch (of twigs) containing a hundred stalks, a single time.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was present at (the case of) Ma'iz (may Allah be pleased with him) when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to be stoned. He ran away, and the people followed him, stoning him, until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with him in the graveyard and struck him with the jawbone of a camel, and he died from it.
