It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Banu Amr bin Awf to make peace between them, and the time for prayer came. The mu'adhdhin came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Will you lead the people in prayer, so that I may call the iqamah? He said: Yes. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayer. Meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came while the people were in prayer, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made his way forward until he stood in the row, and the people clapped. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not turn around in his prayer. When the people clapped a great deal, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him to remain in his place. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised both his hands and praised Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed him, then he stepped back until he was level with the row, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward and led the prayer. Then he gave the salam and said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying firm when I told you to?" He said: It is not fitting for Ibn Abi Quhafah to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why is it that I saw you clapping so much? Whoever is faced with something in his prayer should say Subhan Allah, for when he says Subhan Allah, (the imam) will turn to him. Clapping is only for women."
