Abu Wa'il relates that Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) said on the day of Siffin: "O people! Hold your own opinion suspect in matters of religion. I saw us when we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and had we been able to turn back his decision (with our own opinion), we would have done so. We never placed our swords on our shoulders for any matter except that they made the way easy for us towards a matter that we recognised, except for this (present) matter of ours. And I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal; had we been able to turn back the decision of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would have done so."

Shaqiq relates: I heard Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) say at Siffin: "O people! Hold your opinion suspect. By Allah! I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal; had I been able to turn back the decision of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would certainly have done so. By Allah! Abu Wa'il relates: Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, so we went to him, and he said: "Hold your opinion suspect in matters of religion. I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal; had we been able to turn back the decision of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would have done so." And Allah and His Messenger know best.

Shaqiq bin Salamah narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We never placed our swords on our shoulders for any matter except that we found an easy way in it, except for this matter. By Allah! There is no dispute on earth that we close up except that a dispute more severe than it breaks open. If only you had seen me on the day of Abu Jandal bin Suhayl! Had I been able to turn back the decision of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would certainly have done so, although he (peace and blessings be upon him) was far better and nobler than me. The narrator says: Abu Jandal had come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as a Muslim while his father was a disbeliever, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) handed him back to his father, who (his father) put him in chains. Then he (Abu Jandal) came again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him back again.

Abu Wa'il narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said on the day of the Battle of Siffin: O people! Hold yourselves suspect. I saw myself on the day of al-Hudaybiyah; had we seen any opportunity for fighting, we would certainly have fought them. At that, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood? Will our slain not be in Paradise and their slain in Hell? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed." He said: Then why should we accept this humiliation in our religion and go back before Allah has judged between us and them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn al-Khattab! I am the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never let me be lost." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) returned in a state of anger and could not restrain himself until he came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood? Will our slain not be in Paradise and their slain in Hell? He said: Indeed. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then why should we accept this humiliation in our religion and go back while Allah has not yet judged between us and them? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Ibn al-Khattab! He is indeed the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never let him be lost. Then Surah al-Fath was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and recited it to him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Is it a victory? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."

Shaqiq relates that Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people! Hold your opinion suspect. By Allah! We never took hold of our swords and headed towards a matter that would put us in hardship except that they made the way easy for us towards a matter that we recognised, except for this (present) matter of yours, for it only keeps increasing in severity and confusion. If only you had seen me on the day of Abu Jandal! Had I found helpers against (the decision of) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would certainly have objected."
