Sayyiduna Khuzaymah bin Juzayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the ruling on the rabbit? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it." I said: I will not give it up so long as you do not forbid it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It menstruates" (or he said: "It bleeds"). I said: Then the hyena? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And who eats the hyena?"

Sayyiduna Khuzaymah bin Juzayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you to ask about some of the creatures of the earth. What do you say about the lizard (dabb)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not eat it, nor do I declare it unlawful." I said: Then I will eat whatever you have not declared unlawful. But, O Messenger of Allah, (what is the reason?) He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A nation among the nations was lost (transformed), and I saw a creature that gave me doubt." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the rabbit? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not eat it, nor do I declare it unlawful." I said: Then I will eat whatever you have not declared unlawful. But, O Messenger of Allah, (what is the reason?) He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been informed that it bleeds." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the hyena? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And who eats the hyena?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the fox? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And who eats the fox?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the wolf? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does anyone in whom there is any good eat the wolf?"
