Sayyiduna Khuzaymah bin Juzayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about some of the creatures of the earth, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask about whatever you wish." I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me about the lizard (dabb). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it. I have been told that a nation of the Children of Israel was transformed into creatures of the earth." I said: I will not give up eating anything that you have not forbidden. I asked: Then the rabbit? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it. I have been informed that it menstruates." I said: I will eat whatever you have not forbidden. I asked: Then the fox? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does anyone eat the fox?" I asked: Then the hyena? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does anyone eat the hyena?" I asked: Then the wolf? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does anyone in whom there is any good eat the wolf?"
Khalid bin al-Walid al-Makhzumi (may Allah be pleased with him): His kunyah was Abu Sulayman. He was Khalid bin al-Walid bin al-Mughirah bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Makhzum bin Yaqazah bin Murrah bin Ka'b bin Lu'ayy bin Ghalib bin Fihr bin Malik, and his mother was Lubabah bint al-Harith bin Hazn bin Bujayr bin Ruwaybah bin Abdullah bin Hilal bin Amir bin Sa'sa'ah.
