Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), seeking the pleasure of Allah, so our reward became due upon Allah. Among us were those who departed (from this world) without consuming anything of their reward; among them was Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him). He was martyred on the day of Uhud, and he had nothing except a striped woollen cloak. When we covered his head, his feet came out, and when we covered his feet, his head came out. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Cover his head with it and place idhkhir grass over his feet." And among us are those whose fruit has ripened for them and they are picking it.

Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) say: We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), seeking the pleasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, so our reward became due upon Allah. Among us was one who passed away (from this world) without consuming anything of his good deeds; among them was Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him). He was martyred on the day of Uhud and left a cloak; when we placed it over his feet, his head was exposed, and when we placed it over his head, his feet were exposed. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered: "Place it over his head and place some idhkhir grass over his feet. And among us are those whose fruit has ripened for them and they are picking it" - meaning, eating it.

Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Al-As bin Wa'il owed me a debt, and I was a blacksmith by trade. I went to ask him for my debt. He said: I will not give you until you disbelieve in Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: I will not disbelieve in Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) until you die and are then brought back to life. He said: Will I be resurrected after death? I said: Yes. He said: Then will I have wealth and children? The narrator said: So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Have you seen the one who disbelieved in Our verses" up to "alone" [Surah Maryam: 77-80].
Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Hammad bin Shu'ayb narrated it in this way from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, whereas people in general narrated it as we mentioned first, that is, from al-A'mash, from Abu al-Duha, from Masruq, from Khabbab. If Hammad bin Shu'ayb recorded it accurately from al-A'mash, then it is gharib (singular) in the hadith of Abu Wa'il."

By Allah! I have never tied a knot over it, nor have I ever withheld it from anyone who asked." Then he wept, and he was asked: What has made you weep? He said: "I weep because my companions passed away and the world diminished nothing from them, while we have remained after them until we find no place for it."
