The narrator said: Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: We, the company of the Ansar, had a need with the governor, and what we asked of him was a difficult matter. So we went to him with some men of Quraysh and others; they spoke to him and reminded him of the instruction of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning us. He mentioned the difficulty of the matter, and the people excused him and left, but Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) kept pressing him. By Allah! He found no way out but to fulfil our need. So we went out and entered the mosque, and the people were sitting in circles. Hassan said: I laughed, and I was making them hear: By Allah! He, Ibn Abbas, was more deserving of it than all of you. By Allah, this is the remnant of prophethood, the inheritance of Ahmad (peace and blessings be upon him), the refinement of his traits and the essence of the likeness of his nature. The people said: O Hassan, be moderate. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: They have spoken the truth. Then Sayyiduna Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) composed these verses in praise of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both):
"When the face of Ibn Abbas appears before you, you will see excellence for him in every gathering.
When he speaks, he leaves nothing to be said by any speaker, with choice words in which you see no deficiency.
He fulfilled what was in the hearts and healed it, and left for no man of sense anything to say, whether serious or in jest.
You rose to the heights without hardship, and attained their summit, neither as a coward nor as a weakling.
You were created an ally of manliness and generosity, open-hearted, and you were not created dull-witted nor feeble-minded."
Then the governor said: By Allah! By "dull-witted, feeble-minded" he meant none other than me, and Allah is the judge between me and him.
