Sayyiduna Hubshi bin Junadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) was standing at Arafah during the Farewell Hajj. A Bedouin came, took hold of the edge of his ((peace and blessings be upon him)) cloak and asked him for it, and he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) gave it to him, and he went off with it. It was on this occasion that begging was declared forbidden. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Charity is not lawful for a rich person, nor for one who is strong and able-bodied, except in grinding poverty or a crushing debt." And he said: "Whoever begs from people in order to increase his wealth, it will be scratches on his face and hot stones of Hell that he will eat. So whoever wishes, let him beg little, and whoever wishes, let him beg much."
