Sayyiduna Hanzalah al-Katib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we passed by a woman who had been killed, with people gathered around her. The people made way for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "This one was not one who would fight." Then he said: "Go and catch up with Khalid bin al-Walid and tell him: he must not kill any child nor any hired labourer."

Sayyiduna Hanzalah al-Katib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) mentioned Paradise and Hell, and it was as if we were seeing them with our own eyes. Then I went out and came to my family and began laughing and joking with them, and some unease arose in my heart. So I met Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I have become a hypocrite. He asked: How is that? I said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he ((peace and blessings be upon him)) mentioned Paradise and Hell, and it was as if we were seeing them with our own eyes; then I came to my family and began laughing and joking with them. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We do the same. So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him. He ((peace and blessings be upon him)) said: "O Hanzalah! If you remained with your families in the same state as you are with me, the angels would shake hands with you on your beds and on the road. O Hanzalah! (There is) a time for this and a time for that."
