The daughter of al-Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said to my grandfather al-Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him): I have not seen any people weaker or worse in the matter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than you, the Banu Umayyah. He said: My daughter, do not blame us; I will tell you only what I saw with these two eyes of mine. We said: By Allah, we keep hearing that Quraysh talk up this sabi' (one who has turned from his religion) in our mosque; fix a time among yourselves for him so that we may seize him. So we fixed a time among ourselves for him. Then, when we saw him (peace and blessings be upon him), we heard a sound, and it seemed to us that there was no mountain left in Tihamah that had not crashed down upon us. We were not in our senses until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed his prayer and gone back to his family. Then we agreed on another night. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came, we advanced towards him, and I saw that al-Safa and al-Marwah had come together, one meeting the other, and they stood between us and him (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, even after that it did us no good.

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Al-Hakam bin Abi al-As used to sit with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke, he would first twitch (his face, mockingly). the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed him and said: "Be like that." So he remained afflicted with that twitching (of the face) until he died.

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, he was spoken to about al-Hakam bin Abi al-As, and he said: "I will not untie a knot that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) tied."
