حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، وَعُرْوَةِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، وَعنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: أَعْطَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ عَطَاءً فَاسْتَقَلَهُ، فَزَادَهُ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَيُّ عَطِيَّتِكَ خَيْرٌ؟ قَالَ: «الْأُولَى» . فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «يَا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ، إِنَّ هَذَا خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ وَحُسْنِ أَكْلَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِاسْتِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ وَسُوءِ أَكْلَةٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ، وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى» . قَالَ: وَمِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ؟ قَالَ: «وَمِنِّي» . قَالَ: فَوَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ بَعْدَكَ أَحَدًا شَيْئًا أَبَدًا " قَالَ: " فَلَمْ يَقْبَلْ دِيوَانًا وَلَا عَطَاءً حَتَّى مَاتَ، فَكَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ عَلَى حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ أَنِّي أَدْعُوهُ لَحِقِّهِ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَهُوَ يَأْبَى» . فَقَالَ: إِنِّي وَاللهِ لَا أَرْزَؤُكَ وَلَا غَيْرَكَ شَيْئًا. فَمَاتَ حِينَ مَاتَ وَإِنَّهُ لِمِنْ أَكْثَرِ قُرَيْشٍ مَالًا
Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: On the day of Hunayn the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) a gift; he considered it little, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) increased it. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Which of your two gifts is better? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Hakim bin Hizam! This wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with a generous heart and in a good manner of consuming it, it is blessed for him; and whoever takes it with greed and an ill intent, it is not blessed for him, and he is like one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand." Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And is it the same when taking from you, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even from me." Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By the One who sent you with the truth, after you I will never take anything from anyone. The narrator said: So he accepted neither a stipend nor a gift until he died. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: "O Allah! I call You to witness regarding Hakim bin Hizam that I invite him to take his due from this wealth, but he refuses." Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) would say: By Allah, I will take nothing from you or from anyone else. So when he died, he was among the wealthiest people of Quraysh.
حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، ثنا الزُّهْرِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ يَقُولُ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَعْطَانِي، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى»
Urwah bin al-Zubayr and Sa'id bin al-Musayyib narrated that they heard Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he gave me; then I asked him and he gave me; then he said: "This wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with a contented heart, it is blessed for him; and whoever takes it with greed, it is not blessed for him, and he is like one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand."
حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ وَابْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَعْطَانِي، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «يَا حَكِيمُ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ، كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى» . فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا. «فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَدْعُو حَكِيمًا إِلَى الْعَطَاءِ، فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَهُ مِنْهُ» ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ دَعَاهُ لِيُعْطِيَهُ، فَأَبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: «إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ، إِنِّي أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ حَقَّهُ الَّذِي قُسِمَ لَهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْفَيْءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ» . فَلَمْ يَرْزَأْ حَكِيمٌ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ "
Urwah bin al-Zubayr and Ibn al-Musayyib narrated that Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he gave me; then I asked him and he gave me; then I asked him and he gave me; then he said: "O Hakim! This wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with a generous heart, it is blessed for him; and whoever takes it with greed, it is not blessed for him, and he is like one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand." I said: O Messenger of Allah! By the One who sent you with the truth, after you I will take nothing from anyone until I depart from this world. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would invite Hakim to receive a gift, and he would refuse to take it. Then Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) invited him in order to give him something, and he refused to take anything. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O assembly of Muslims! I call you to witness regarding Hakim bin Hizam: I offer him his share that has been allotted to him from this fay' (spoils), but he refuses to take it." So after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Hakim never took anything from anyone until he passed away.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ثنا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْمُؤَدِّبُ، ثنا سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَا: ثنا فُلَيْحُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ وَعُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْمَالِ فَأَلْحَحْتُ فَأَعْطَانِي، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي، فَقَالَ: «مَا أَنْكَرَ مَسْأَلَتَكَ يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ، وَإِنَّهَا أَوْسَاخُ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِسَخَاوَةٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهَا، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَكَانَ كَالْآكِلِ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، يَدُ اللهِ فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطِي، وَيَدُ الْمُعْطِي فَوْقَ يَدِ الْمُعْطَى، وَيَدُ الْمُعْطَى أَسْفَلُ الْأَيْدِي»
Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrated from Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for wealth and insisted, and he gave me; then I asked him and he gave me; then he said: "O Hakim! How objectionable is your (repeated) asking! This wealth is green and sweet, and at the same time it is the dirt of people's hands. Whoever takes it with generosity of heart, it is blessed for him; and whoever takes it with greed, it is not blessed for him, and he is like one who eats but is never satisfied. The hand of Allah is above the hand of the giver, the hand of the giver is above the hand of the one who receives, and the hand of the one who receives is the lowest of all hands."
حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ مُسَافِرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِائَةً مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَأَعْطَاهُ، ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ مِائَةً فَأَعْطَاهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «يَا حَكِيمُ بْنَ حِزَامٍ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى، وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ» .
Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrated that Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for one hundred camels, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them to him. Then he asked for another hundred, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave those too. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Hakim bin Hizam! This wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with a generous heart, it is blessed for him; and whoever takes it with greed, it is not blessed for him, and he is like one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and in spending, begin with those in your care."
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ رِشْدِينَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَنَّ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَعْطَانِي، فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ
Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrated from Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he gave me. Then he narrated a hadith similar to the previous one.
