Abu Khalid al-Walibi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), or one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to tend goats; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) moved on from goats to camels, and a man was his partner in this work. The two of them hired out (their camels) to the sister of Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). When they had finished the journey, some money owed to them remained due from that sister. His partner began going to them and demanding payment, and he would say to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): Come along. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "You go yourself, for I feel shy." Once, when he (the partner) came to them, the woman said: Where is Muhammad? Why does he not come with you? He said: I told him, but he said that he feels shy. She said: I have never seen a man more modest or more chaste than him. This settled in the heart of her sister, Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), so she sent word to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Go to my father and ask him for my hand. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your father is a very wealthy man; he will not do it." She said: Go and meet him and speak to him, then I will be enough for you; and go to him when he is intoxicated. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did so. He went to him, and he married him to her. When morning came, he sat in his gathering, and it was said to him: You have done very well; you have married Muhammad (to your daughter). He said: Did I really do that? They said: Yes. So he got up and went in to her and said: People are saying that I married Muhammad (to you), though I did not do so. She said: Do not think your judgment weak, for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is such and such. She kept persuading him until he was content. Then she sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) two pouches of silver or gold and said: Buy a garment and give it to me as a gift, and a ram, and such and such. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) did so.
