Sayyiduna Bashir bin al-Khasasiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), whose name in the Jahiliyyah was Zahm, and whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named Bashir after he emigrated, said: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ibn al-Khasasiyah, what grievance do you have against Allah?" I said: I have no grievance against Allah about anything; nothing but good has ever been done to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the graves of the Muslims and said: "These people have attained much good." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said it three times. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the graves of the polytheists and said: "These people have missed much good." He said this too three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) glanced and saw a man walking among the graves wearing sandals. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called out to him: "O wearer of the two tanned-leather sandals, take off your sandals." The man looked and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he took off his sandals and threw them away. This wording is that of the narration of Muslim bin Ibrahim.

Layla, the wife of Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), said: I used to fast and join the fasts together (wisal, i.e. without breaking the fast). Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade me and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from this and said: "Only the Christians do this." Rather, fast as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded: complete the fast until the night, and when night comes, break your fast.

Layla, the wife of Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), relates that Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) told her that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): I fast on Friday and do not speak to anyone on that day. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not fast on Friday by itself, except among days of which it is the last. As for not speaking to anyone, then by my life, if you speak and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, that is better than keeping silent."

Sayyiduna Ibn al-Khasasiyah al-Sadusi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to give him my pledge of allegiance, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) set these conditions for me: "That you bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger, that you offer the five prayers, fast Ramadan, pay the zakah, perform Hajj to the House, and strive (jihad) in the path of Allah." I said: O Messenger of Allah, two of these I cannot manage. As for zakah, by Allah, I have only ten camels, which serve my family for riding and for carrying loads. As for jihad, people say that whoever turns his back (in battle) has incurred the wrath of Allah, and I fear that when I face fighting my heart will weaken and I will dislike death. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand and shook it, then said: "No charity and no jihad, then how will you enter Paradise?" So I gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) my pledge on all of them.

Mu'thir bin Afarah said: I stayed in the house of a man from Abd al-Qays called Ibn al-Khasasiyah, and Ibn al-Khasasiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) told us: I said: O Messenger of Allah, on what shall I pledge allegiance to you? Then he narrated the same hadith.

Juray bin Kulayb narrates from Sayyiduna Bashir bin al-Khasasiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and our companions also told us from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, narrating from his Lord, the Exalted: "Fasting is a shield by which My servant shields himself from the Fire. Fasting is for Me, and I Myself will reward it; he leaves his food and his desire for My sake. By the One in whose hand is my soul, the smell of the fasting person's mouth is, with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection, better than the fragrance of musk."

Sayyiduna Bashir bin al-Khasasiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and caught up with him (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Baqi', and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Peace be upon the believing inhabitants of these dwellings." The strap of my sandal broke, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Lift your foot?"
I said: O Messenger of Allah, my time of living alone has grown long and I have become far from the home of my people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bashir, do you not praise the One who chose you from among the tribe of Rabi'ah, a people who think that were it not for them, the earth would have overturned with all who are on it?"
