Abdullah bin Awf al-Kinani (may Allah have mercy on him), who was the governor of al-Ramlah on behalf of Umar bin Abd al-Aziz, relates that he was present when Abd al-Malik bin Marwan, on the day Amr bin Sa'id was killed, said to Sayyiduna Bashir bin Aqrabah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu al-Yaman, I have come to need your words, so speak. Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever stands up to deliver a speech, seeking by it nothing but to be seen and heard of, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will make him stand in a place of showing off and seeking fame."
