Sa'id bin Abyad bin Hammal narrates that his father, Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him), when he came as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah, spoke to him (peace and blessings be upon him) about the sadaqah (charity due), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O brother of Saba'! Sadaqah must be given." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have only sown cotton. The people of Saba' have scattered, and only a few of them remain in Ma'rib." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a settlement with Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him) that, on behalf of the people of Saba' who remained in Ma'rib, seventy garments of the best value of Ma'afiri cloth would be paid every year. And they continued to pay it until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he accepted Islam while three brothers from Kindah, who had been his slaves in the Jahiliyyah, were in his ownership. He went as a delegate to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and one of them was with him, serving him. That servant spoke to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) during his caliphate, so Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him to free the slave who served him, and to sell him his two brothers who were in Ma'rib in exchange for six non-Arab slaves from the captives of al-Qadisiyyah. Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him) did so: he freed the one who was with him, and in place of his two brothers took six non-Arab slaves from the captives of al-Qadisiyyah. The narrator said: The reason Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him) went as a delegate to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was that, after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the officials went back on the agreement that Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal had made with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for seventy garments. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) upheld it just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had set it, until Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, this agreement came to an end and the matter reverted to the ordinary sadaqah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the salt mine called "Shadha", which was in Ma'rib, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted it to him. Then Sayyiduna al-Aqra' bin Habis al-Tamimi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Prophet of Allah! I came to this salt place in the Jahiliyyah, and it lies in a land where whoever came to it would take (the salt); it is like flowing water." The narrator said: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Abyad bin Hammal (may Allah be pleased with him) to give back this land grant of his, and Abyad said: "I give it up on the condition that you make it a sadaqah on my behalf." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a sadaqah on your behalf, and it is like flowing water; whoever reaches it may take from it." The narrator said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in return for giving it up, granted him land and pasture in al-Jawf, the Jawf of Murad. And he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about protecting arak trees, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no protected area for arak trees." He said: "There is an arak tree within my enclosure." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no protected area for arak." Faraj said: "By 'my enclosure', Abyad meant the land that had crops on it and was fenced around."
