Sayyiduna Aws bin Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as the delegation of Thaqif, and we were lodged with him (peace and blessings be upon him) in a tent of his, while our allied brothers (of al-Ahlaf) stayed with al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to us after Isha and talk with us, and most of his (peace and blessings be upon him) talk was complaining about Quraysh. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "We and they are not equal: we were humiliated and weak in Makkah; then when we came to Madinah, the war went by turns, sometimes against us and sometimes in our favour." One night he (peace and blessings be upon him) was late in coming to us, and very late, so we said: O Messenger of Allah! You are late. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My hizb (daily portion) of the Qur'an remained due upon me, and I disliked going out without completing it." The narrator said: We asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): How did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) divide the Qur'an into portions (hizbs)? They said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) divided it into (portions of) three, five, seven, nine, eleven and thirteen (surahs), and the portion of the Mufassal.
