Sayyiduna Aws bin Aws al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the delegation of Thaqif. He said: I was at the lower end of the qiblah side; there was no one there except the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was sleeping, when a man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and whispered something to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and kill him." Then he said: "Does he not bear witness that there is no deity except Allah (la ilaha illallah), and bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" He said: Yes, indeed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: la ilaha illallah (there is no deity except Allah). Then when they say it, their blood and their wealth become inviolable for me, except by its right."

Sayyiduna Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were in a tent in the mosque of Madinah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of part of the tent. Then a man came and whispered something to him, and it could not be known what he was saying. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and tell them to kill him." Then he said: "Perhaps he bears witness that there is no deity except Allah (la ilaha illallah)?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and tell them to release him, for I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: la ilaha illallah. Then when they say it, their blood and their wealth become inviolable for me, except for a rightful matter, and their reckoning is with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Go to them and tell them to kill him." Then he called him back, and he returned after having gone. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then tell them to release him, for it has been revealed to me that I should fight the people until they say: la ilaha illallah. Then when they say it, their wealth and their blood become inviolable for me, except by its right, and their reckoning is with Allah."

Sayyiduna Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was narrating stories to us and admonishing us, when a man came and whispered something to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and kill him." When the man turned away, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called him back and said: "Does he bear witness that there is no deity except Allah (la ilaha illallah)?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take him and let him go his way, for I have only been commanded to fight the people until they say: la ilaha illallah. When they do that, their blood and their wealth are inviolable for me (and may be taken only) by right, and their reckoning is with Allah."
