Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Three verses of the Book of Allah were revealed concerning me. The prohibition of wine was revealed; (the reason was that) I drank wine with a man, then I quarrelled with him and he quarrelled with me, and in my drunkenness I fought with him and wounded his head. So Allah Almighty revealed these verses: {O you who believe! Wine and gambling} [al-Ma'idah: 90] up to {So will you not desist?} [al-Ma'idah: 91]. And this whole verse was revealed concerning me as well: {And We have enjoined upon man kindness to his parents; his mother carried him with hardship} [al-Ahqaf: 15]. And this verse was revealed: "O you who believe! When you wish to consult the Messenger privately, give some charity before your private consultation" [al-Mujadilah: 12]; so I gave a single grain of barley in charity, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are indeed one who gives very little." Then the other verse was revealed in full: "Are you afraid of giving charities before your private consultation?" [al-Mujadilah: 13].
