Huzayl bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man came to Sayyiduna Abu Musa (al-Ash'ari) (may Allah be pleased with him) and Salman bin Rabi'ah and asked them both about (the inheritance of) a daughter, a son's daughter and a full sister. They said: Half for the daughter and half for the sister. And both of them said: Abdullah bin Mas'ud will certainly agree with us. Then I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned what the two of them had said. He said: If that were so, I would have gone astray and would not be among the rightly guided. Rather, I will judge in this with what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) judged: "Half for the daughter, a sixth for the son's daughter to complete the two-thirds, and what remains is for the sister."
