Huzayl bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man came to Sayyiduna Abu Musa (al-Ash'ari) (may Allah be pleased with him) and Salman bin Rabi'ah with the question of (the inheritance of) a daughter, a son's daughter and a full sister (from both father and mother). They said: Half for the daughter and half for the sister, and they did not make the son's daughter an heir to anything. And both of them said: Go to Abdullah bin Mas'ud; he will certainly agree with us. So the man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), asked him, and told him of the ruling of the two of them (Abu Musa and Salman bin Rabi'ah). He said: If that were so, I would have gone astray and would not be among the rightly guided. Rather, I will judge in this according to the judgement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Half for the daughter, one share for the son's daughter to complete the two-thirds, and what remains is for the full sister (from both father and mother)."
