It is narrated from Huzayl bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Musa (al-Ash'ari) (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about (the inheritance of) a daughter, a son's daughter and a sister. He said: Half for the daughter and half for the sister, and he gave nothing to the son's daughter. He said: Ask Ibn Mas'ud; he will agree with me. So the people asked Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and (the questioner) informed him of what Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If that were so, I would have gone astray and would not be among the rightly guided. I will judge between you according to the judgement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Half for the daughter, a sixth for the son's daughter, and a third for the sister." When this reached Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Do not ask me about anything as long as this learned scholar is among you.
