حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «إِقَامُ الصَّلَاةِ لِوَقْتِهَا» ، قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ مَهْ؟ قَالَ: «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» ، قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ مَهْ؟ قَالَ: «ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» ، ثُمَّ سَكَتَ، وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
قُلْتُ: فَأَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِخَالِقِكَ نِدًّا، وَأَنْ تُقْتَلَ وَلَدَكَ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ، وَأَنْ تَزْنِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ» ، وَنَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان: ٦٨]
قُلْتُ: فَأَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِخَالِقِكَ نِدًّا، وَأَنْ تُقْتَلَ وَلَدَكَ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ، وَأَنْ تَزْنِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ» ، وَنَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان: ٦٨]
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, which deed is the most excellent? He said: "Establishing the prayer at its time." I said: Then what? He said: "Then kindness to parents." I said: Then what? He said: "Then jihad in the path of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent, and had I asked him for more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have told me more.
I said: Which is the greatest sin? He said: "That you set up a rival to your Creator, that you kill your child for fear that it will eat with you, and that you commit adultery with your neighbour's wife." And concerning this the Qur'an was revealed: "And those who do not call upon another god along with Allah, nor kill the soul which Allah has made sacred except by right, nor commit adultery; and whoever does that will meet a grievous penalty of sin" [Surah al-Furqan: 68].
I said: Which is the greatest sin?
