حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا أَبُو جَنَابٍ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي حَيَّةَ الْكَلْبِيُّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَوْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ: سَأَلْتُ الْأَسْوَدَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ: هَلْ كَانَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ يُفَضِّلُ عَمَلًا عَلَى عَمَلٍ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ، سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ، فَقَالَ: سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّهَا إِلَى اللهِ وَأَقْرَبُهَا؟ قَالَ: «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» ، قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ مَاذَا عَلَى أَثَرِ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» ، قُلْتُ: ثُمُّ مَاذَا عَلَى أَثَرِ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» ، وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
قُلْتُ: أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَبْغَضُهَا إِلَى اللهِ وَأَبْعَدُهَا مِنَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ، وَأَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ، وَأَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ» ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان: ٦٨]
قُلْتُ: أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَبْغَضُهَا إِلَى اللهِ وَأَبْعَدُهَا مِنَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ، وَأَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مَعَكَ، وَأَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ» ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا} [الفرقان: ٦٨]
Awn bin Abdullah said: I asked al-Aswad bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him): Did Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) hold one deed to be more excellent than another? He said: Yes; I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, which deed is most beloved to Allah and brings one closest to Him? He said: "Performing the prayer at its time." I said: Then what after that? He said: "Then kindness to parents." I said: Then what after that? He said: "Jihad in the path of Allah." And had I asked him for more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have told me more.
I said: Which deed is most hateful to Allah and furthest from Him? He said: "That you set up a rival to Allah while it is He who created you, that you kill your child for fear that it will eat with you, and that you commit adultery with your neighbour's wife." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "And those who do not call upon another god along with Allah, nor kill the soul which Allah has made sacred except by right, nor commit adultery; and whoever does that will meet a grievous penalty of sin" [Surah al-Furqan: 68].
I said: Which deed is most hateful to Allah and furthest from Him? He said: "That you set up a rival to Allah while it is He who created you, that you kill your child for fear that it will eat with you, and that you commit adultery with your neighbour's wife." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "And those who do not call upon another god along with Allah, nor kill the soul which Allah has made sacred except by right, nor commit adultery; and whoever does that will meet a grievous penalty of sin" [Surah al-Furqan: 68].
