حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي خَيْثَمَةَ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الصُّدَائِيُّ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ: أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ فَقَالَ: سَأَلْتَنِي عَمَّا سَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا، وَبِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ، وَالْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» ، وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
Abu Amr al-Shaybani said: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: Which deed is the most excellent? He said: You have asked me what I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Performing the prayer at its time, kindness to parents, and jihad in the path of Allah." And had I asked him for more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have told me more.
