It is narrated from Amr bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him) that Ma'qil bin Muqarrin came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: He has made the bed unlawful (for himself). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O you who believe, do not make unlawful the good things that Allah has made lawful for you" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 87]; (its expiation is that) you free a slave. Then he said: My slave stole a cloak from my (other) slave. He said: "Your property has been stolen from your own property (the hand will not be cut for this)." Then he said: My slave woman has committed fornication. He said: "Then give her lashes." He said: She is not married. He said: "Her Islam is her ihsan (chaste status)."
