It is narrated from Hammam bin al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) that Ibn Muqarrin asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! I have sworn that I will not sleep on my bed for a year. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "O you who believe, do not make unlawful the good things that Allah has made lawful, and do not transgress; indeed, Allah does not love the transgressors" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 87]; make expiation for your oath and sleep on your bed. He said: I am wealthy. He said: (Then) free a slave. Then he said: My slave stole the cloak of my (other) slave. He said: "Your property has been stolen from your own property", meaning the hand will not be cut for this. Then he said: My slave woman has committed fornication. He said: Give her lashes. He said: She is not married. He said: "Her Islam is her ihsan (chaste status)."
