It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that a freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him to give him some money to trade with, with the profit to be shared between them. He gave him twenty thousand dirhams, and he bought wine with it, then brought it to al-Ubullah. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to him and did not leave a single jar or any other vessel of it without breaking it. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed wine, the one who drinks it, the one who buys it, the one who sells it, the one who presses it and the one who carries it.
